The Oregon Coast, Cascade Mountains, Columbia Gorge, and Canadian Rockies in Pictures

Galleries

Cascade Head on the Oregon Coast : These Oregon Coast photos were made on Cascade Head, a basalt headland that extends into the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Salmon River Estuary. Cascade Head is a Nature Conservancy preserve located a few miles north of Lincoln City. The view from Cascade Head is one of the most dramatic vistas on the Oregon coast, and is well worth the relatively short hike.

Mount Rainier National Park : These are a few of my favorite photos from a brief trip to Mount Rainier National Park in late summer, 2008. Although we traveled to Sunrise as well, these photos were all taken near Paradise Inn and the Nisqually River Canyon. When we first arrived at Paradise, the weather was crystal clear. Within a few hours, smoke from several large forest fires hundreds of mile south in Oregon began to drift in. When Mother Nature serves up lemons, it's time to make lemonade.

Columbia Gorge: Fisheries : The Columbia River was once the home of huge salmon runs; chinook, sockeye, silver, chum, and steelhead. Now only remnants remain, supported by heroic and expensive efforts. For 10,000 years before Europeans settled the region, this resource supported Native Americans who knew how to harvest the fish without destroying the runs.

Your Bio

My name is Doug Gorsline, and I love taking photos.

Although I'm based in Garden Home, Oregon, (a neighborhood in west Portland, Oregon), I do most of my personal work either at the Oregon Coast, in the High Cascades, or just east of the Cascade Mountains.

Past equipment includes a Burke and James field camera, a bunch of Canon FTbs and FTbNs, and a Mamiya 645.

My current equipment is a Canon APS-C sensor based system. I look forward to getting my hands on a 50D in a few weeks. I've refined my lens collection to include the best optics available for APS-C at this time: The centerpiece is the fabulous Canon EF-S 18-55mm f2.8 IS; the newest addition is the very sharp Tokina 11-16mm f2.8; I also have the excellent EF 70-200 f4L IS; and the Sigma 10mm fisheye.
